Labour's new housing targets are forcing 10,000 new houses on Fylde and Wyre over the next ten years.
Fylde's & Wyre's combined housing target has been almost doubled from 537 houses a year to 992 a year. That is the equivalent of building two new towns the size of Kirkham and Wesham in a decade.
Nobody is saying that new homes should not be built. We need homes for local people. But these targets are simply too high, too fast and have been imposed from Whitehall with little regard for the impact on local communities.
Residents across Fylde and Wyre are already seeing growing pressure on GP surgeries, school places, roads, drainage systems and other public services. Before thousands more homes are built, there must be a clear plan for the infrastructure needed to support them.
If councils are forced to allocate land to meet these targets, more greenfield and greenbelt land could be put at risk of development. Once these green spaces are lost, they are lost forever.
We call on the Government to review and reduce these housing targets, protect our countryside and green spaces, and ensure that infrastructure comes before large-scale development.
